The track only Mercedes SLS AMG GT3
With the New York Motor Show spluttering in to life across the Pond, we’ll have a number of show stories to cover to keep you up to speed, the first of which is the official reveal of the Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 track car. The Mercedes SLS GT3 will be an evocative site in the hands of customers going racing from 2011, reminiscent as it is of the hugely successful racing career of the original Mercedes Gullwing in the hands of iconic drivers of the 1950s such as Sir Sterling Moss. Mercedes have taken the road-going SLS AMG Gullwing and thrown a lorry load of carbon fibre in its direction.
It’s particularly appealing if you like a car with a decent turn of speed – the V60 will do 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds – like the reassurance and practicality of 4WD – the V60′s electric motor drives the back wheels – drive in to London on a regular basis – the 48g/km emissions are congestion charge free – and get taxed as BIK from your company. If all those apply – and you already appreciate the Volvo V60 is a very good car to start with – then the V60 plug-in hybrid is a bit of a no-brainer, even with a headline price of nearly £50k (which gets within £6k of an equivalent non plug-in after the taxpayer has chipped in). It seems that many buyers agree, and Volvo is being inundated with orders.
Carmakers have their plans for this year's Geneva motor show lined up. But here's something that we expect to see at Geneva in 2010: Mercedes-Benz's new high-performance coupe. Up to now, reports are that this gullwing Mercedes sports car would wear the SLC name.
